Make barcodes?

I was wondering if anyone knew how barcodes are made, or a site or resource that explains them? My manager told me that a guy that worked at our store once printed a barcode that did various commands for him, so he didn’t have to type, he jsut scanned it in… sounds neat. Anyone have any ideas?
