Mouse and masks

i’m trying to have a mask the shows a colored version of an image over a black and white one for a menu. as the mouse rolls over parts of the image the mask(rectangle) follows the cursor and shows the color, foudn tutorial and have been trying for hours to get it to work, and i know its some problem with my actionscript placement, tutorial got confusing a bit when it came to that part. heres the tutorial

any help would be great, even a link to a better tutorial.

the tutorial is for flash 5 and i’m using flash mx, tried saving it as flash 5 file to see if that made a diff, it didn’t.

That tutorial SUCKS, use the one on this site: HERE
When you could remove the _y value, and use it as a mask!

yeah i looked at that tutorial but all i see in the preview is a grey background, doesn’t change on mouse over either, at least not for me. i like the effect of the other one.

Could you post your .fla?

yeah, one sec

ok, heres my fla

Take a look at this:

nice, thanks, i’m gonna check out the specifics now, but if i might ask, what did u change?

Well, I just did it my way - did’nt look that much at your file! It’s actually very simple, you where messing around with the worng code!

yeah i was checking out your actionscript, thanks for the quick reply and fix, that was really frustrating me.

Just glad I could help

cheers

one question - i did a test movie and at the begining of the image it seems a little offset with the mouse over, why is that? or is it just a test movie flaw?

Flash has a bad habbit when it comes to bitmaps (images) - try to convert them into symbols or use another format - gif or png perhaps!

will do, thanks again.

converting to symbol worked in case anyone else is reading.

cancel that, just moved offset to middle
