Hi, I’m planning to move to New York City (Staten Island) and I’m going to further my college education there, and I also desire to find my career in media production for the advertising/marketing industry in New York as well. But that is in the future, and as for NOW I’m glad to say that I have two types of work-skills that might guarantee me a job in the New York City area. My regular 40-hour occupation is a union job that pays enough to make a decent living for a single person, while I design HTML & Flash websites on the side. I’m confident (especially after the freelance work I’ve done this year) that I could work for a organization or small business that might hire me based on my experience, even though web design jobs have that “B.A. in Graphic Design” qualification.
What I’m not so certain about is the current job market for interactive designers in the New York City area. How much are WE (Flash interface designers, HTML designers, Flash animators, and so on) really in demand in New York City? What type of industries are willing to hire designers for a long-term basis? What are some of the online production houses in NY that are excellent at hiring, helping, and retaining talent?
What are the ways that I can find out about the Flash design career scene for myself? Here are my ideas so far:
- Visit a local online job forum and see what people are talking about
- Research production houses (another word for design firms) in NY and check their job postings
- Visit a local career outlook website that gives important info on what type of careers are worth pursuing in the city.
Does anyone have any other ideas? I am hoping to change my on-the-side job into a sustainable part-time career while I go to school, instead of continuing to rely on my 40-hour union job. Thanks.
