I just met with a company about a 3d contract and I went thru my spill and showed my portfolio and reel. Then they asked me if I use Silo. And I was like Silo? So I went home and did some homework and dloaded a trial. But it seems to be a pretty good and stable proggy for those who are looking for affordable 3d modeling. http://www.nevercenter.com/ . Strange enough I never heard of it and it is actually being used by a small studio out here in the bay area. worth checking out in my opinion.
is it just a modeler? It seems everything in their gallery is rendered in something other than Silo.
it is just a modeller. I believe you have to render elsewhere. at least it seems that way. I have yet to render anything. Still getting around in the model window it seems pretty cool. For 100 bucks. Free if you are inschool.
Wow looks very nice!
One that i really want to try is Zbrush (http://pixologic.com/home/home.shtml).
For $109 - Silo looks pretty sweet too though.
edit: after reading the “free if your in school” part, looks like i will be trying htis out right now
If you go to their forums they give links to some pretty good free renderers. This has proved to be a good find for me today. Some of those free renderers I never knew about.
Wait, is the free one the one the learning edition one, or can you get the full one for students for free. I tried to download it but I couldn’t figure out how to get the free student one. Any ideas?
Try contacting them. I am pretty sure you have to satisfy some criteria for the free software. Or else everyone would get the freebie and no one would buy.
**edit
The education version is kinda wacked. But for 109 bucks and a free external render. This could help folks step up to max or xsi without spending g’s.
Silo Learning Version (now at version 1.22) is completely free and has full functionality, though saves are limited to meshes with 100 faces and plugins are disabled.
Eh, I’ll probably just end up buying it.
I’ve been wanting to get into 3d for a while now, just haven’t had the money, but I could afford this, so I wanted to know if you 3d guys think this would be a good place to start for eventual progression to the big names in 3d like max and cinema and what-not.
So far I would say it is a very good value and the modelling techniques hold true to all other proggy’s. I like it, and it is not a resource hog. It also has some interesting plugins, mixed with free renderers that support GI and radiosity. I would say this is a good buy.
Alright cool, I think I’ll get this pretty soon. Thanks for the help 3d
Anyone think it’s better than 3DSM?
HELL NO…its not. At 109 bucks you should not imagine it would be…lol
Another intriguing 3d package…well not intriguing but unique and affordable. Dont think I will try this one tho.

Nathan: Have you used ZBrush? Morse (i think it was him) showed me it and i have wanted to try it forever now.
I downloaded the PLE of this, but its not MAX thats for sure. I like it because it is very simple. Some stuff is hard to find though (MAX tends to lay it all out for you).
That’s good news ;). I thought now that this is out, Max will be “out” when it comes to 3D modelling :P.
Check out http://nevercenter.com/uploads/block_images/9/brook_podboy.jpg - rofl, the tail on that thing looks like one of those swirls from barbershops. They try to be creative but overdo it.
dippy
+I absolutely love Z-Brush. Version 2 has made some good adjustments. There are so many good 3d apps these days it is unbelieveable but zbrush and strata are up there on the favorites list. But nothing tops LW.
sharif
I am amazed at what is being modelled with a program that costs 109 bucks. I have been asking around and evidentially this proggy is about as respected as zbrush in the industry. Studios actually use it.
Actually 3D Studio Max tops LW buddy :P.
not
Are you seriously ? Any proof :pleased:?
Theres no way LW tops 3DSM. 3DSM is used much more than LW and has billions more functions.
They used it in spider-man and x-men for kirupa sake!
really one will never be able to prove the other wrong. I just love LW and I have used both and LW was a perfect fit for me (although I use max from time to time). Lightwave was used for Day After tomorrow and a bunch of other films. So that would not be a good measure. I guess it is up to the user. I have used both so I guess my opinion weighs more than your…lol
Well - you convinced me :).

J/K. But you did convince me :)…that LW is good program. I still think 3DSM is better ;P.
