Nuke'n your computer how do you do it

I just formatted my laptop. Now I am going through the daunting task of re-installing everything and transferring licenses and all that crap. This time I made a list of programs and backed everything up on dvd’s. But somehow someway, I always manage to overwrite something that I really needed. What system do ya’ll use when you format?
