We’re developing a CS3 site using Flash Video and are running into some playback issues on mid-to-low end computers. The video is 450x500 and includes an alpha channel to allow the background to pass through. On newer, fasters computer it looks great – but gets choppy and border-line unusable on slower machines.
The video itself was created using After Effects and includes alpha, a soft drop shadow, and two simulated shadows at the bottom. We were able to compress that into an FLV file that is about 13MB using Sorenson squeeze. The settings we used are 2-pass, variable bit rate, 364kbps datarate, 1:1 frame rate, keyframes every 300, compress alpha data. It plays as a progressive download in Flash which is fine for users with broadband.
If anyone has any experience with using FLVs that include alpha, please run the site on a mid-to-low end computer and offer your thoughts on compressing, limits, anything that could help to guide us…. that would be awesome. Thanks.
