Question about side scrolling

I’m thinking about making a side scrolling game however I was wondering how side scrolling is done. The most obvious is to make the environment in one large movie clip and just have the movieclip move however I believe this is a very processor intensive method of doing it and what wondering if anybody knows a more practicle way of doing it. Thanks
