Removing Background from the image

Hi everyone,
Can anybody help me in guiding how to remove background from an image. Like i have a jpeg image in which Guitar is lying on the carpet and the carpet colour is grey. Now i want the background of this with white colour and Guitar still visible. How can i do this.

I agree, pen tool is good. :wink: also gives you the chance to export the pen paths to illustrator, so you can have a vector version of your selection. :!:

I’d have to go with the layer mask method. It’s reversible as stated by “I Like Pie” and to me, is the easiest.

Click on the Add Layer Mask on the Layer Palette, go around the guitar edge with a hard black brush, Go to the Magic Wand…Set the tolerance to 255 and Contiguous, click on anything on the background…Go to Edit>Fill>Black…Done.
