yeah, but no dentistry work is worse than having your molars taken out, so feel lucky.
my story is from 1976, and would scare your love spuds into an area they haven’t been in at least 15 years…

well, since they’re working on your tooth, there’s not much anesthesia can do. they’ll jar your mouth open with some metal apparatus. then they’ll take the drill and start…at first it feels like an ordinary dentist’s toothbrush cleaning your teeth, till it hits the root. if you’re in serious need of a root canal, you’re in luck. since a root canal is meant to repair damaged nerves at the base of your tooth, you’ll most likely feel nothing until the whole operation is complete. now if those nerves aren’t completely dead, then God bless your poor soul (which was my case).
but to brighten your day, i was kidding about the anesthetic, they’ll apply it to the surrounding teeth, especially to the one they’re working on so you’ll feel minimal pain. just make sure you tell them to.
they stuck this metal scafolding (like the type they paint buildings from) in my mouth, then covered the scafolding with rubber to block stuff going down my throat, since I had so much novicane I couldn’t move my tongue. They then drilled and then did XRays, then they drilled again, then some more XRays, then they put a crown on it, then sent me home with lots of Demerol…
It wasn’t a fun experience…

my goal is to be really drugged during and after the ordeal.
never had a root canal done but i’ve had teeth taken out when i was in elementary school. mostly the ones in the back of my mouth. one of the teeth broke in half as he was pulling it out so 5 injections and an hour later, he was still trying to take the **** tooth out. finally he did, but all the injections didn’t work so it hurt like hell.
I had a root canal a few months ago. It doesn’t hurt at all during the operation… but it’s kinda creepy watching them stick the little thingies in your teeth. It just hurts afterwards. Don’t sweat it.
make sure they put enought stuff to make it go numb, they didnt put to much to me, and when they where drilling and fixing my cavity, the drill heart like a son of a )(*@!. 
I had a root canal and several follow-up work for one of my top-front teeth a few years ago. Edwin, mine was painless and I didn’t even have to have my mouth forced open with a metal bracket. Since, more than likely, the nerve is probably dead or…dead (couldn’t find another descriptive word haha), it won’t be that bad.
There is some minor pain afterward as 28 said, but it isn’t too bad =)
