would this scrolling image animation work to make a planet look like it is spinning on an axis?

I am sure it would be possible, but would you be able to achieve the the three dimensional look produced by a sphere rotating? I would wonder it would be nearly impossible without having to use shapes (instead of images) to animate and curve around to simulate movement around a circular object.
