Site's up - woo

Yeh I’ve almost finished my portfolio site. It’s hosted at http://davidh.deep-ice.com at the moment, but should be done (with preloaders on the flash files and other added bits) and uploaded to a propper domain within two weeks.

Critiques welcome, I’m not all that happy with it personally and feel I could make it much better. But given the time frame (it was for a project for my course) I thought I’d better not get carried away with it. Plus we weren’t ALLOWED to make it completely flash. Plus this is my first website I’ve made.

pleasedon’thurtme.

peace.

well for your first site i’m impressed. Is the hosting companies info gonna be there for ever or just temp? But for a first site its nice. The only seggestin i would make is the buttons at the bottom are a little hard to read. I had to get really close to my screen to read them and if i get brain cancer i’m sending you the bill  but again for a first site its a lot better than my first one

Use pixelfonts! I do not like blured text! Layout is to gray!

haha. No you can pay your own bill.

But thanks heaps :). I will try and make the buttons larger on my next attempt, which will be shortly after I hand this in. I really can’t be bothered going back and redoing them.

The hosting info won’t be there, I’ll be registering a propper domain and have hosting without adds. This is just temp so I can show people what I’ve done so far.

Thanks also for your tips vendi, I’ll keep them in consideration for next time. Still new to the whole ‘pixel font’ thing, but I’m slowly learning the basics.

ok I changed the BG colour so that it’s less grey. What do you think?

I got 2 java error messages on the entrance, and I didnt like the colors that much!

Thank your teacher from me for not allowing you to make it all in Flash.
Let’s hope you continue that way… My teachers force us to make sites in Flash, ridiculous.

Onto critique.
The colors, well… they’re alright, it’s not what i would’ve gone with personally… but it’s your design site, so your taste ought to reflect in it.
I think you could’ve done way better in the image background department though… if you seriously need one, I don’t think it should be that one.
None of those boxes in the middle needed to be in Flash… Honestly, they’re all text. If anything, the box farthest to the right could remain… Since it delivers nothing immense to the page it doesn’t matter much.
I think the other two are only worsened by being Flash though. Just make them divs, simple and easier maintenance. I don’t care for the fonts on the news box or the content either. Remove the italics and bold and I think it’d look better.

I was going to compliment you on the top-menu, until I noticed it was just an ad from your free hosting… If you keep the site, you ought to make a menu system up there.
I resent the use of Tables, but I suppose it’s better than Flash.

thats really good davidh, congratulations

thanks for the tips jdan. As soon as I’ve handed this in I’ll start work on improving it… or even re-doing the whole site, because the more I look at it the more I don’t like the same aspects you listed hehe.

I’m not too worried about improving it before handing it in because apart from maybe ben’s site the rest of the class’s work is horrible… and that’s being nice.

I will continue to not do it in flash, I just don’t know anything about html, but I guess I could always learn.

There’s a site which I really liked www.seempieces.com and want to do something similar to that, the way it loads just in the content panel, rather than reloading the whole site. I just don’t know how. If anyone can point me towards some good tutorials on how to do this it would be much appreciated.

basically www.seempieces.com is using “iframes”, i don’t know too much about them, but sure google can help

thumbs up for you portfolio :thumb:

you could do the same thing using divs with overflow control… i wouldn’t use iframes.
i feel cramped on seempieces.com, think he should’ve let the main contents flow down the whole page… I already have a scrollbar on the main browser window, why should i have a smaller one in the middle of his site?

Yeh I saw in the source that he had ‘iframes’ although I have no idea about them. I also have no idea what divs are :stuck_out_tongue: I’ll look around more when I’ve got the time though, thanks anyway. Atm my pc is out of action however (see “my computer wont start >_<” in the pc related forum) so it’ll probly be a couple of weeks before I get the chance to look at all this again.

sigh… the fickle hand of fate.

Up the saturations in the background pictures, up the quality of them too (they’re pixilated). I would get rid of the hosting bar thingy, kind of annoying. Make the site a little bigger, or make the buttons more readable. VERY NICE FOR YOUR FIRST SITE!

Keep Up the Good Work!

probably been said, but use pixelfonts www.fontsforflash.com you can get some free ones there.

i didn’t read any of the other posts, but your nav is really small and could use some pretty effects on it. the other bit looks ok, but it’s kinda bland color wise.

Thanks Nirvana. The hosting bar (as has been said before) is temporary. Yep I’ve got pixel fonts from that site I’ll look at using them in version 2.0 :).

Thanks again everyone for your comments. I need them to grow. Feed me more!
