Spotify expands into in-app fitness experiences

Spotify is pushing into fitness with workout videos, playlists, and Peloton classes built into the app, for both free and Premium users.

This feels less like “Spotify loves fitness” and more like “Spotify wants more minutes-per-day so they can sell a bigger ad/subscription story. ” Once workouts live inside the same app as music/podcasts, they can bundle, cross-promote, and quietly make it harder for a standalone fitness app to justify its own subscription.

“Workout video + music + now playing controls” all crammed into Spotify sounds like a guaranteed accidental-tap festival on a sweaty phone — have they said anything about a proper workout mode that locks the player UI while you’re mid-session? might be wrong here.

Haven’t seen anything from them about a “workout lock” mode either.

Look — if they ship this as the normal player UI with a video layer on top, it’s gonna be an accidental-tap carnival once your hands are sweaty. I’ve paused stuff with my cheek on a treadmill before, and it’s exactly as dumb as it sounds.

You mentioning “workout lock” made me think of the cheek-on-treadmill pause thing too — are they planning any kind of lock/gesture-ignore mode so sweaty hands don’t turn the player into an accidental-tap carnival? not sure on that side.

Yeah sweaty-hand UI is a mess — I’ve had Spotify skip tracks just from wiping my phone on my shirt mid-run. A proper “workout lock” that ignores touches unless you do a deliberate long-press/gesture would save a lot of accidental chaos.
