Uni Project - Interactive Map - General help required!

Dear all,

I’m a 3rd year Network Engineering/Database Administration student in Edinburgh, Scotland, so my flash isn’t great (read: “is bloody awful!”). I’m in the middle of a large project, and could really do with a little help!

Specification - I’m designing an application for use by Police Call-Takers/Dispatchers in Police Control Rooms. It’s only a mock-up to show what sort of functionality the program could provide, so I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible.

I’ve got an SQL Database, which stores “Incidents”, and handles input/output from a web style interface… just simple form fields, etc. That works fine.

The second part of my project is a Flash mapping screen, showing the centre of Edinburgh. I would like it to show operators exactly where they’ve sent Officers, where incidents are occuring, etc, but, to be honest, I haven’t got the foggiest idea how I could implement this.

I’ve made a very simplistic map of the Centre of town, with a little “mini-map” thing, and now, I’d like to be able to do two things with it; (have a look, please remember I’m not a multimedia student! - http://www.ally.nu/project/map_screen_beta.swf - It’s large, 500k, as I’m not concerned about size)

  1. Allow Operators to drag and drop, or “click” at certain points on the map, leaving “markers” to show Incidents in progress, locations of interest, etc. I can manage a “drag and drop” type thing, but… the markers “float” above the map, if you see what I mean.

  2. Less vital, but I’d like the ability for Operators to be able to “draw” on the map, leaving notes, misc incident info, etc.

Is any of what I’m proposing viable? I would appreciate any comments, suggestions or crits. Help would be good too  I think I’ve come to the right place!

My Project Supervisor really wanted me to tie the info in the database into the map, but bugger that… I’m having enough trouble as it is!

Cheers in advance,

Ally
