Using php as variables in flash

I’m trying to send a value to flash via php which I can then use in actionscript. I thought I could modify the live hit counter tutorial to do this but for some reason it doesn’t work. Sending a value to a text box works fine but, for example, if I try to rotate a movieclip x degrees depending on the number of hits it doesn’t work at all. Anyone know what I’m on about? Thanks.
