Video on the web

hi. i’m working on tearing apart an animation for the web (quicktime movie). it’s 6 minutes long and weights approximately 60MB. i know, it shouldn’t be on the web, but…the client wants it.

the spec is this:

  • this is to be built with flash mx

  • the client is willing to wait up to but not exceeding 10 seconds for the video to start.

  • there will be a navigation bar where the user will be able to click to certain sections of the video.

my questions are:

  • is there a certain equation whereby you can accurately guess-timate download time for a broadband connection, i.e. 450KB/sec, etc…

i know it depends upon server requests and if the user has a dedicated line, etc… 450KB is the fastest i’ve seen it from my computer. but is there a general rule i need to know so i can educate the client?

  • am i right to think that i should be breaking this video up into 30 second sections or something like that?

  • what is the best way for me to approach this project and what are the potential obstacles and pitfalls i should look out for?

i guess i’m just looking for a good place to start on this and the best way to build it. i’m supposed to build a few tests for the client to look at – that’s the first phase.

thanks. - fumeng.
