Websafe colours - how important?

Hi!

I’m making a site (in Flash MX 2004) where I would like to use a very light beige colour - I don’t find this in the websafe coulours. How ‘unsafe’ is it to use this colour: ‘E9E9D1’? I’m using it in an xml page (xml menu) - does this change things?

Thanks for your help!

Marie

The worst that can happen is that different monitors will probably show that colour a little differently… I wouldn’t worry about it, whoever is viewing your site isnt going to notice anything until they switch to a different computer.

If we designers were limited to only websafe colours… man oh man would the internet be a bleak bleak place…

websafe colors for the most part are a thing of the past. Most sites use custom colors. The big thing you have to compare is the color on a LCD and a CRT. LCD tends to be bright and can make some colors look ok while on the CRT they look neon and vice versa,

Off the top of my head that color you have there seems like it would be almost a light grey-ish - yellow -ish. I use e9e9e9 alot and that tends to almost look white on LCD better check. (memorizing hex colors I need to get out more :hangover: )

Thanks! - i’ll check it out

Yeah… don’t bother with it. I used to, and then I realized that it’s so insignificant, that I never needed to do it in the first place…

Yeh, very rarely does it become an issue.

true, but i would like to throw in my favorite color lol FF9933 @ DDD mee too =(

This is the best looking orange i think there is

If you have time and you think it might be an issue (probably not though), you can take a look at the hex numbers close to your e9e9d1 that are web safe and see if you like it. (actually once you set your colors I believe you can click and make them websafe).

Doubtful it is an issue. Like someone said earlier, the LCD vs CRT is a bigger issue to me.

It really goes right along with decisions you have to make when using Flash. Do you make the files small so everyone can easily load, or can you make them bigger knowing your audience most likely has high speed connection?

So, does your audience most likely have newer monitors or older? Newer monitors display colors much better so the web safe is not as important with them.

slightly off-topic, but another consideration i take when designing for the web is to check how my work displays in in color-blind mode.

Yes, most definitely!

 for sure!

i haven’t seen any major problems with websafe colors, especially in flash:)

huh?
