Website menus - tricky animation question

hello

i am having trouble figuring out how to design and script a menu system for my website.

i want to have at least three buttons on the menu. when a button is clicked, it will begin an animation that appears to be an object (such as a box) expanding out from the button and opening up to display more content. i want that box to stay open until another menu button is clicked, and at that point i want the first box to animate being closed up and contract back into the button before the next box expands out and opens up.

my explanation is probably too vague to understand, but i have found this effect on various websites such as http://www.betak-design.de/website_english.html

does anyone have any ideas on how to do this? i would be grateful to hear them.
