don’t always trust norton’s! symantec has a great product, but it’s not foolproof (although it doesn’t really sound like you have a virus).
i worked as a computer tech one summer and i saw my fair share of virus machines. some viruses (klez especially) wouldn’t show up under the norton’s scan, but would show up under the housecall scan (quite strange since housecall is free).
