What is flv?

I need to import some videos on a site that I am working on, and I am a bit lost. If I import them, and create a swf file, I guess that would work fine, but is there a better way? What I would really like to do is have a button that will load the three clips into an container, and be able to pause and play them. Can this be done? Any help would be great - thanks!
