Whats your Opinion? _blank window vs. _parent

I am doing a quick poll because I need to know what you all think because your all web developers.
When you go to a new site, old site, whatever, and you click on a button, do you prefer it opening up in a new window? Does this bother you? Or do you prefer the parent page to simply change to the link desired, forcing you to use the back button to return?

So; Whats your preference? I need to know.

Hey Phil, what is this all about ? THat dinosaur thing ??

Anyway, pop up are ALWAYS annoying if you ask me. I just hate them. Whenever I want another page, I right click and open in another window.

If you are going to a new page? like if I click on one of the search page links from your page i would want it in another browser window.

Hey Jubby, you gave out a link about drawing tips and all not so long ago, but I can’t find it anymore. Could you post it once more ??, it looked really great.

I think it depends upon what you’re doing. If you have no forward/backward navigation on your site, then you’re better off having it pop up in it’s own window… if you do then keep it in the same window.

I prefer to keep the action in one browser window. In addition to cluttering up the desktop, all the new windows and/or pop-ups are gnawing away at your system resources.

(This can be deadly if you already have several aps open, and are in the middle of, say, composing a long email in OE, and decide to call up char map because your laptop keyboard makes using special characters practically impossible. As you might infer, I’ve been down that rocky row more than once recently.)

For the windows that keep popping back up, like on my free angelfire web page, I simply drag them to the bottom of my desktop with just th title bar showing, and dismiss them later.

My webpage tries to force linked pages to run within my frames, so that my navigational tools remain visible. However, some pages have code which breaks the frames of the calling page, and you have to use your browser’s ‘back’ button (sometimes 2-3x in rapid succession) to get back to where you were. a few sites have code which won’t let you do this with the ‘back’ button.

For awhile this trend (breaking frames) was getting to be prevelant, but now I notice that many sites are getting away from this trend, and not breaking the frames of the calling site.

For those that do, I’m in the process of including some simple JavaScript to force those pages to open in a new window.

OK, I admit it: I’m selfish and greedy and want to keep the action at my website, and retain my rare visitors.

I am getting highly irritated with the pop-ups that Angefire imposes on me, so I suppose I’ll have to break down one of these days and active my domain at www.splinx.com, now idle. My intention is to include much more Flash content when this happens. Obviously, I’ve got a lot of study/work ahead of me.

Web hosting suggestions anyone?

In the meanwhile, please drop by my WEBSITE and scope the scene there, and also check out my ongoing adventures with that pesky Flash engine animation.

Once I get that all sorted out, I have some good ideas simmering for some other projects which I hope will be educational and useful as I continue my efforts to bridge the chasms between art, technology and science.

Cheers,
sp

Pom: I don’t remember what you speak of. I know that I gave a link to my collection of art work…is that what you are talking about? if it is heres the URL…

www.angelfire.com/dc/vidgame/art.html

But I don’t think that is what you are talking about…

Thanks everyone for your input. I was having a problem with Dreamweaver. It was like you would click a link, go there, press the back button or return to menu button and you would go straight to the cached copy. Then it all of a sudden started reloading every time this happened. So at first I changed all the links I could to open in new window. then I figured out the problem. It was a .cfm - .asp extension problem. .cfm would reload. .asp would go to cache copy. So I am changing it back to where the links will open once again in the same browser, no new windows, which is my preference. Thanks for your help everyone!

& SPLINX-We kind of hhave similar sites. I like what you have done, kind of neat. But thats cause I have done something similar…

Hey Phil,

Thanks. I like your site a lot, both the design and the content.

The structure of my site dates back to my earliest days learning HTML, and so I’ve been building upon the somewhat clichéd three frame format I first learned back then, working within the limitations of static and animated GIFs, adding a little JavaScript here and there, and scouring the web for interesting links to feature on my pages, including this one, and yours, if you don’t mind.

Cheers,
sp

No, that’s not what I was talking about. Never mind, I’ll check the posts.

Splinx-
I don’t mind the link at all, thanks! But keep an eye open cause we are going to be publishing it to it’s URL in the next few weeks. Also Splinx, since we both have similar sites I was wondering if you have figured out any inside information on any good advertisers to display in my site. Have you made any money off advertising at all? I have found one that might seem a neat deal. Maybe we can research and share resources in the quest to phill our pages up with advertising. I figure I will have 200 pages within my own Corpus T site within about 6 weeks. Thats an awful lot of space to waste…How much traffic do you get if you don’t mind me asking?

Splinx,
I went through your site again. Love the animations your doing. And, like Dave, I absolutely love that engine, the artwork, yada…It’s great! Thats real talent! Looks like chrome! Love it. I didn’t see the search engine you had on your page and was wondering if you mind if I use the same one? Let me know. I like your site and it’s content. My only suggestion is it’s just a little hard on the eyes. A little dark. But thats just me. But the amount of content you have is humongous. Paperboy was cool. Theres a neat link on my site under search, called find Articles; Get it if you don’t have it, it’s proven invalubale to me in the past. Unique searches are cool.

pj

I probably don’t get much traffic at all outside friends, family, and a few prospective clients. My site functions primarily as my own personal library and portfolio - a place where I can study, display some of my work, and continue monkeying around with HTML, Flash and other web technologies.

I suppose I just haven’t thought of my site as being marketable, although it’s not nearly as quirky as it once was, so I haven’t researched the advertising angle at all. I put up with Angefire’s pop-ups for now because they gave me 50 MB.

I have no idea what kind of money can be had by filling up with ads as you describe, but I try to keep an open mind. Mostly, I’m just looking for a really good professional situation and trying to focus on self-improvement.

So many media, so little time.

Not really looking at ‘philing’ it up, what I meant to say was the placement of good, select, visitor orientated advertising. I was poking around and saw one that pays as much as 1.50 per click, I think that one required that persons e-mail address. But there is good quality advertising for sure and if you pick them correctly you can earn a little extra money. It’s kind of neat really. Might as well. And with the amount of internal links I am going to have in this site it might be substantial someday down the road. The neat thing about links, and choosing links that ‘score highly’ on the search engines is it helps to index your site towards the top as far as relevence, especially with the Directories such as Yahoo, which is no search engine at all. When someone does a search on Sherman Skolnick for instance, it will more than likely post both of our sites at some engines and directories, and that is extra traffic to that particular page if you know what I mean. I have both internal and external links for skolnick and you have frames which is equivelent. You should offer popupX software on your site, but they are really not too bad as long as you don’t try to close them, on that one your right. Just leave em and close em when you leave. What about that search engine that is on your site? where is it again and do you mind if I use it?

Thanks very much for your kind words. Somehow, I missed one of your posts above where you originally asked about that search engine, which is for metagopher and it’s on my Techno page at the bottom. I can’t remember where I found that, but help yourself to the code, which is only about four lines. These days, I usually go with Google. I think they offer some promo intermittantly so that you can add their toolbar to your page, possibly something like metagopher does.

I could just paste it here for you now, but I don’t know if that’s permitted here, or not.

So, I gather what you’re saying is that if you post an ad for say, Carter’s Little Liver Pills, then you get $1.50 anytime somebody clicks on it from your site?

Also, you can see the javascript for opening a new window (and keeping your frames intact in the original window) on the same page in the ‘head’ section with the rest of the code for the Monster job site. I snipped that from somewhere, can’t remember now, maybe from one of my books.

Thanks too for bringing up the “murkiness” of my site. I heard that from someone else today too, so I appreciate your feedback there. I’ve been turning up the brightness on all the links from grey to white, so I hope that helps some. Unfortuntely, with GIFs being the way they are, it’s not that easy to change background colors because the GIFs are anti-aliased in conjunction with a specific background color, in my case black. I’ve added some low-contrast background images to most of the pages now for atmosphere, so that probably adds to the murkiness problem, at least on some monitors.

For text, Flash isn’t really the ideal situation in all cases, and I have very limited knowledge of CSS, which seems to be the way to go for the most typographically pleasing presentation. Your pages look very nice in that regard.

Anyway. I find all of his fascinating and I hope we are not straying too far off topic.

What, ME, stray off the topic??? Gimme a break! I’m straight as an arrow, focused like a laser beam…Speaking of lasers…ar ar. And I agree that flash is not ideal for text, and I would say almost always. tired now, but will post later. thanks fer the engine i’ll grab it minyana-

Hey Phil,

I just spent some time over at Corpus T poking around. You’ve really done a fine job with that site, and I’m impressed with the wide range of links you have as well as your interface - nice mix of exposed and drop-down. I see you’ve got an ad on there so congrats if you’re making a little moola in the bargain. It’s small, tasteful, and unobtrusive. Nice article too. (2 squadrons, not wings previously at that base.) I notice you’ve got little black fringes on your Yakuza kanji. It’d be easy, but a little tedius to touch that up, and that’s why I’m resistant to changing my background colors right now. I’d like to carry on with this topic, probably could learn a lot from you. Maybe we should move it to the Random forum. What think ye?

sp

Splinx-
Tell you what, lets meet in Random at Princess Bride Quotes. It almost has 500 replies and is dying down. I would like to see that thread live on a tad longer. So, might as well meet there if you don’t mind. And thank you too, for your kind words. I don’t have any paid links yet. I wanted to do one step completely at a time. That is literally the final step. I’ll see ya @ the princess bride. I am waiting to find a Japanese person who can draw me an authentic Yakuza symbol. That one sucks, but alas, they are hard to come by at all.
