Why do we use 1.000000E-002

Hi I’m a bit confused as to why the gaming system most of the time uses log values such as **1.000000e-002, ****1.000000e-001, etc **for any motion or speed calculation. I can identify that using a log values give a smoothness to the motion. But still i cudn’t understand the reason behind such things. Can anyone pls explain me that? thanks!
