Totally get that, the “battered” ones are usually the best because they’re already broken in and just work. I’ve started hand - washing my favorites and air - drying them so they don’t get wrecked in the dryer.

Hand - washing and air - drying is the move, and turning them inside out helps keep the fabric softer and the elastic from getting stressed.

Inside - out is clutch, and skipping fabric softener helps too since it coats fibers and can make elastic lose snap faster.
