The Dell is made for 3d stuff… it supports 8gb of ram and those video cards are a beast.
The 8800’s are more gaming and not really specifically made for the 3d softwares.
Alienware wise I would rather look at (as you do not need dual graphics cards in your laptop):

I know the new Dell studio line isn’t work station quality…but its worth a mention
Acer.
God, I don’t know what it is with you and Acer
NVIDIA® GeForce® 8800M GTX means games
NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3600M means 3d programs
if i want to work on 3d programs! get dell Precision
what about the fast card for rendering ( FX 3600M OR 8800M GTX)
THX
3600M I would presume google around and see what it says though… but I’m pretty sure the 3600M was built for CAD 3dMax and maya type softwares so it makes sense it would be faster at those things and it is quad core. Having dual 8800 would probably beat the 3600M lol.
8800 in SLI would beat most everything…
as a sidenote, Alienware IS Dell.
So it’s more like, which dell should I choose ?
And, once again, 3d cards have nothing to do with rendering speed (unless you use systems like gelato). Get a highend consumer card and you should be more than fine.
Instead, spend your money on the best processors out there. They do all the number crunching.

We all know that… but the companies basically run complete seperate from one another. Its like Voodoo and HP you don’t call a voodoo an HP laptop that just degrades the awesomeness.
 [whisper]Although dell tends to use a lot of the same hardware as alienware now in their consumer gaming laptops[/whisper]
i will get Alienware with 8800m gtx, Area-51 m17x

Then again HP and Voodoo are more transparent about their relationship than Dell and Alienware.
