So my brothers got this game a week or so ago. I visited them over the weekend and realized I too had to get it if I was going to be able to communicate with them in any way (they, as well as two friends who had come over, had it and were engrossed). So I did. Animal Crossing: Wild World - my first animal crossing game.
First Impressions:
Its a mix between the sims and pokemon. Its like the sims because there really is no point. You have this character and you live in a house and you basically work at things to get money to get more stuff and keep on-a-going. There’s also ways to modify your looks with clothes and haircuts etc.
Its like pokemon in that much of the game’s objective (other than not having an objective, if you can call it that). Is acquiring things - things like fish, insects and even furnature. Furnature and things of the like come in sets and having a complete set is kind of a big deal I guess (diablo II-esque as well).
The Addiction:
Here’s the thing. Its not ALL that great. Really. I mean there’s only so much you can do… shake some trees… go fishing… talk to the 4 or 5 or so people that live in your town… maybe eat some fruit. Thats about it. You’re limited. However, the game plays in real time. That is to say when its 2:00 in real life, its 2:00 in the game. When its winter where you are, its winter in the game. In fact, I’ve built two snowmen in the past two days. The first one thought he looked good so he mailed me a snowman dresser. The other complained that he looked deformed though I thought he was better than the first (jerk!). But, what this means is that it takes a long time to get things done - real time long time. If you mail someone a letter, it will take a while to get a response, almost as long as a day (I dont know for sure). Trees you plant take like 3 days to grow - assuming they dont die after the first. And, as seasons change, you’ll be able to collect different insects, and fish for different fish. You want to keep coming back because its ever-changing… at least I imagine for a year. Then, you’ll have done everything
Multiplayer:
Multiplayer is a treat. Since we had so many people with the game, we had 4 people running around doing things in each other’s town. There was a thing going on were everyone was getting pissed because everyone kept cutting down trees in the town they were in or burying garbage throughout the place.
Of course, when it comes down to it, there’s only so much you can do with multiplayer, too. It’s still the same game, you just have other people mucking around in your town now. Of course its always fun to send them a dirty letter which they’ll get some time after multiplayer has ended.
Low-down:
Ok, I didn’t really want this to be a full review or anything. I just wanted to say “hey, who’s got this?” and take it from there. I can’t seem to put the game down though. I keep mailing my neighbors shells to see what they send back to me. It just takes so long for them to respond. Also I’m trying to catch that oh-so-elusive tuna.
