Animated GIF Issue (?)

greetings,

i’ve encountered an issue regarding animated GIFs created with Adobe ImageReady and Macromedia Fireworks

i have about 10 frames which i set to loop 3 times…
when viewed in a browser, it loops 3 times… but when viewed using window’s picture viewer, it loops twice ONLY… in some cases, it loops forever… when viewed online or from a server site, it does not loop accordingly in certain situations - inconsistent…

it’s also been reported that MAC machines start their loop count at 0…
so, windows = 1 2 3
macintosh = 0 1 2 3

hmm, so, is this an ongoing issue or is there something i don’t know?

here’s a sample

http://www.digitalmalaya.com/misc/clients/gdi/oracle/view.htm

try viewing it in a browser and on ur desktop…loop counts are different…

maybe its not so much the gif but the application used to show it?

hmm, so u’r saying it’s a bug in the ImageReady & Fireworks?
is there any way this issue could be resolved?

i tried it with a very very basic 2-frame gif animation… same issue! tsk!

Fireworks
2-frame animation ( loop 3x )

viewed from desktop : 3x
viewed from IE : 4x
viewed from Opera : 3x
viewed from Netcape 7.2 : 4x

hmm… just HOW exactly is this issue to be explained?

ImageReady
2-frame animation ( loop 3x )

viewed from desktop : 2x
viewed from IE : 3x
viewed from Opera : 2x
viewed from Netscape 7.2 : 3x

argh! why is it like THAT?

it just seems like theres a confliction between how people think animated gifs should be looped. Looks like IR shoots for those who think that the extra frame is included in the loop and FW shoots for those who dont. Try another gif anim program and see what you get with that.

I personally never thought finite looping to be that reliable anyway. I guess this just demonstrates that thought.

hmm, i agree with u, senocular…
for personal reasons, i don’t think there’s really a practical reason for implementing finite loopings…
but again, client’s requirements have to be adhered, otherwise, all these have to be sensibly rationalized… wat do u think?

urr, sorry for the redundant posts in other sections of this forum… it’s just that this is an urgent matter :stuck_out_tongue:

have you tried an extensive google search (maybe you have with what you posted about Mac looping)? I just think more HTML related sites/forums may provide more information concerning this.

yes, i’ve done an extensive goggle search ( if going until page 20 and beyond is extensive to u, then i have :stuck_out_tongue: )
from microsoft to macromedia to adobe’s website to this forum and several others, there seems to be no definite answer available…

i’ve tried other gif animation softwares and the results are the same…
in my opinion, the most probable workaround for this is to code this using javascript or some other language… but i do not think this is practical…right?
imagine if u want to put the banner in a website, u have to bring along the code and configure it accordingly… sigh…

they should make a rule that banners should be done in flash ONLY :stuck_out_tongue:

well this is one of those things that you cant help. You’ll just have to explain to your client that its the way it is and in deciding a loop # to decide on a range, heh.

…but many banners do come with code. It depends on who’s serving them.

well, hope it works
from now on, i HATE gif!
will use JPEG/PNG…boycott GIFs! :stuck_out_tongue:

awwwwwryt!
support this site, ppl! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ive had the same problem myself. At the end of the day there can be 101 internet browsers but the majority of people will use I.E. Dont ask why, i know it sucks. I design my work to this standard, it maybe bad practice but it isnt cost effective to design for more than two types of browser. A good common practice im getting into is to design for Netscape as well as the microsoft-by-product. If i remember correctly AOL, Mozilla, & Firefox use a format of netscape. A good majority of people in america and the UK use AOL and Netscape. I dont know of many other people that use Mozilla or Opera. Im afriad its going to have to be a grey area for me to specifically answer. Its not exactily the software that your using, as senocular said “finite looping not that reliable”. develop your designs within two common browsers (I.E and Netscape) and your less likley to have a problem. I prefer if using gif’s in Image ready, but i suppose that is coming though a bias for adobe. Anyway i hope this helps
