Another request for opinions on processors and graphic cards

So I’m buying a new pc for myself and I’ve pretty much figured out most of the components but there are some things I’m not sure of.

The processor for one.
I’ve been recommended AMD OPTERON 144 [1MB L2, 1.8Ghz]. You might say that Opterons are for servers and you’re right but I’ve been told (many times) that it gives much better performance than any Amd64 or whatever and it’s easily clockable to 2,7Ghz.
And I think dual-core processors cost a bit too much for me…
Any opinions or suggestions on this?

And another thing is the video card
I was thinking of getting Geforce 7900GT but I hear 7900GTX gives up to 25 more fps…
What do you think… Is it worth it?
[ translating from the local currency, the price for GT would be ~$380 and GTX would be ~$650 ]

(PS. Right now I have an ATI Radeon and I’d like to try something other than ATI this time ;))

I’m going to get 2x1024MB of RAM as well I think and I need a computer that would last some time before I have to go buy a new one. (therefore the extra 25fps would help me postpone it a bit)

of course you will get 25 more fps, but you will not see the difference as the 7900GT will max any game avaliable anyway. I don’t think thats worth $300 to anyone. Consider that by the time a game is avaliable that will show you the difference, That card will be worth $300.

On the Opteron…
I, personally, think Overclocking is not right, and you shouldn’t try it because there is a very good chance you’ll cream that brand new processor you just bought, and for so much money.

The part about it being easily done is also nothing I’ve heard of before. Although I have heard of being done, but it’s not easy.

If you know what you are doing, then there is no reason for you to stay away from overclocking it all you want.

You should check out the extensions that the processor has.
They do affect the processing a lot.

On the graphic’s card the thing Defective says is right.
So far getting one might be overkill and the price it costs can be put to better use.
If his is a one shot deal, then it might be a good idea to spend money on it so that later on you don’t have to.
On the other hand, if this can be sectioned off, in terms of purchases; then you should wait.
Possibly even keep that GPU you have for the next couple of months and when the price gets a little lower get and sli pack somewhere.

This computer might be a little strange for games, but if you are trying to go for graphical design, CAD… You might already know, but saving cash for a Quadro GPU or something of the sorts would be recomended. So I’ve heard.

I’m going to be using it for gaming only.
I usually don’t clock stuff either but I’m not really afraid of busting the new cpu because I’ve seen a lot of people clock that cpu to over 2,5-3,0 Ghz without any problems and the clockability of this cpu is mostly why people buy it in the first place, so if I fry it then it’s… too bad for me :stuck_out_tongue:

About the video card, defective made a good point there. I’ll take that into consideration. I need a new monitor anyways.

Thx for the advice

Yeah I have heard what you said about the Opetron but if you really need that extra power, than it’s your choice. There was a test of dual 7800GT’s against a single 7800GT and there wasn’t any real difference. However, on paper, yeah it might give you more FPS but the naked eye won’t notice such a difference. It also depends on what game you play as well. The 7900GTX oviously just recently came out so it’s expensive. You should just buy the 7800GT/X because it’s already a very good card.

I agree with Defective. I place a limit of $200 for any graphics card purchases I make, because while it may not play the current generation games in max detail, it does play the previous generation’s games perfectly. That’s about a 5 month lag anyway.

In the end, by buying previous generation games and a $200 card, I end up saving a lot because older games are considerably cheaper. Every eight months, I just get the highest-quality graphics card under $200 (the previous generation’s high flyers), and repeat the process

Right now, I’m just waiting for a sub-$200 card that can play Quake IV in full detail with a good frame rate. Once that happens, I will upgrade my ATI X800 Pro with whatever that card happens to be.

:cowboy:

I just heard that they stopped making Opteron 144s so I don’t think I can get one from anywhere. I’m gonna go with AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (San Diego) instead.

The 7900GTX’s fps boost will be significant in a couple of years and, although I could buy GT now and GTX later when it’s needed and costs less, I think I’m gonna blow all my money, and then some more, to buy it right away so I can just say that I have a 7900GTX. :stuck_out_tongue:
And I’m not gonna have to worry about upgrading it until I need a whole new computer again…

^thats the best way to think of things. I did that with the 6800GT when it first came out a while back (plays oblivion on high). And still wont have to upgrade for a good year probably. My friends getting that card pretty soon so tell me how it runs if you choose to get it.

sure but it might be a week or two before I get it.

I’m trying to pick out a nice pc case as well while I’m at it… these are hard to find around here. Gonna do some browsing tomorrow and hopefully get everything decided

i would go with the AMD Opteron 148, its only $265~ and you can OC it to 3GhZ
