Well - I realized a few similar threads about favorite musicians, so I figure I’ll join in the craze and ask if anybody here listens to Enigma (Michael Cretu)? (http://www.enigma.de/)
No - Enya, another one of my favorite musicians, was a part of Clannad. Enigma isn’t really a band, for it’s just Michael Cretu. He does most of the mixing and vocals, and his wife Sandra often does some of the vocals also.
In the Pure Moods CDs, they often have Enya and Enigma on the same CD
I am a big fan of Michael Cretu. I even had early version of his work (70’s) before he is more well-known in Enigma. Have you heard “Songs For Unknown Heroes”? This piece is still sound good 20 years after I heard it for the very first time.
You should have his album called “Carte Blanche”, It is awesome too.
I think the first album of Enigma called MCMXL… is really defined what so called nowadays as “ambience music”. I remember back then when I was club-crawler, everywhere I went “Sadness” It’s been played everywhere on and on.
Enigma also always have a good video (clips). Have you seen “Return To Innocence” video? This is a triumphant in how video can really represent the message behind the music. With its strong title and lyrics, all the clip is played backward represent the “return”. All the clips are shot in I guess Mediterranian village with the story of harvest, birth, marriage, and also cool unicorn. Awesome.
Do you know also that Michael Cretu produce music for his partner/wife Sandra? Have a listen to Sandra, you will be hooked.
The video for Return to Innocence is excellent! The imagery and the style of playing half of the video forward and the rest backward was great. I did listen to a few of Michael Cretu’s and Sandra’s earlier works, and they have some flavors of Enigma in them.
I really like the new sound Enigma is experimenting with. Ever since The Screen Behind the Mirror and the Turn Around single, the new Enigma songs are a lot more modern-sounding without overly relying on ancient chants and classical opera pieces. At first, I hated their latest album Voyageur, but now it’s one of my favorite CDs ever! All of the Enigma songs are great to listen to while working or driving
You are right, It’s very ambieny. good for background while do something. In Voyageur I guess Michael Cretu try to “cope” with the way a dance music is made today. On my opinion, he actually does not need to do that. It is just suddenly sounds too pop.
Talking about video, have you seen the video of “The Eyes of Truth”? This is grandeur! : A young Tibetan monks rides an elephant while people along the street pay him a respect and there is alot of rain of flower…
Since the day Michael Cretu set the new genre, do you realize that suddenly alot of people using gregorian chant/traditional songs elements in their music/ Some are works some actually does work. Here are my collection, I put them in similiar entry of all Michael Cretu works:
Richard Souther - Vision - The Music of Hildegard Von Bingen.
Deep Forest - Boheme ( I got all of their works, this one is the best).
I have not seen the “Eyes of Truth” video. The only videos I saw were the ones Launch.com had in their Enigma section a while ago. Launch no longer showcases any Enigma videos, but I remember watching Return to Innocence and Sadness Pt.1. I am not counting the grainy, shortened versions of Turn Around and Boum-Boum on Enigma’s site
I really haven’t listened to other new-age artists. With that said, I have heard a few Adiemus and Deep Forest songs from the various Pure Moods CDs though. I think Pure Moods Vol. 1 had a song by Adiemus and Deep Forest
