Are pro sports players overpaid and/or overrated?

This subject is very sensitive, some people think the pros are overpaid for playing a game for a living. I don’t. A-Rod may get paid like 27 mil a year, but he puts up 50 home runs a year too constantly. NFL players are not overpaid either. Even though they play 20 games a year maximum, the highest paid players are the ones that will throw or score a 70 yard TD or make a big sack or tackle. In the NBA, guys go out and put up 25 or 30 points on basketballs biggest stage, and they do it every game they play.

Player salaries sometimes get out of hand, but it’s the team that pays the players, not us.

and who do you think pays the team that pays the players?

We do, through tickets, merchandise, or even buying a product that is advertised while a game is on…

Due to the outrageous salaries that are now being paid, we rarely see a player stay with a single team for his entire career, making it more difficult for the team to “get intimate” with the community, if they can afford to stay in business.

I think you need to read up on this topic, and take a look at the larger picture if you think that “The Team” is paying the players, and we, as a society, are not…

Just the same as if the CEO of Mattel Corp gets paid 27 mil per year, the people who actually pay for that, is the people who buy Mattel toys, since Mattel raises their wholesale price to make up the difference…

What rev said… They get paid what the teams earn and the teams have ridiculous profits (for the most part).

I think it’s stupid. Some 30 year old man should not be getting payed millions of dollars to play a game intended for children. They don’t help society, they don’t save lives, and they don’t teach people anything, they are useless people who steal money from the families of the idiots who pay $1000+ for season tickets to see the guys play the game.

Careful, Nali. One, you can’t steal what people freely give you. People don’t buy sports tickets going: hmm, I wonder these are for?

Also, I think society is pretty clear that virtue doesn’t translate into a bigger paycheck. As for people who don’t “help” society, don’t save lives, and don’t teach people anything, you’ve pretty much eliminated 60% of the workforce, or more. (I made that percentage up).

I’m not saying I’m glad they make that much money, but hey, if that’s what people pay them, that’s what they make. Don’t like it? Don’t watch sports.

But this is my point… Even if you don’t watch sports, you are paying for the salaries by purchasing something that has advertised during a ball game. You also pay in the taxes in your City, should you have at least one pro team in town.

It isn’t that simple as to just not watch…

Rev

What is the big deal about pro sports?

I can appreciate going out with some mates and getting some exercise and team skills learned, and other positive things…

But never really got the whole pro sport thing… Don’t support any teams or watch any games, just doesn’t interest me. Maybe cos my family and friends aren’t that into watching sports either…

But I spend time and money on things that other people aren’t interested in. So guess its down to “whatever floats your boat”. I’m not going to stop people watching sport, as long as they dont stop me from drawing! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

And the whole celebrity thing, well you get that in Music/ TV/ Film (etc) personalities too, and some of them make loads of cash too!

First, don’t get me wrong. I like sports. I love college sports, and I like the olympics. I just don’t like professional sports.

Yates, so the one year old whose parents spend $4000 on season tickets to the (insert name here) games deserves to suffer and not be able to eat healthily? Not all people are intelligent enough to realize that food and housing are more important than a game. This is why i oppose stuff like the lottery and addictive substances. Even if the stuff doesn’t hurt the user, most of the time it hurts many children because their parents are morons and spend the money on this stuff instead of on important stuff.

And not counting the entertainment industry, most people in society at least make something that people purchase because they need it, help people, or teach people.

Unfortunately, the price of freedom is that stupid people are free to be stupid.

Just be happy with the thought that you aren’t stupid

Maybe stupidity is in the eye of the beholder…?

The same can be said for college sports, Nali. Many college teams charge ridiculous amounts of money for season tickets. Why do you like them?
Read this article for more information on the cost of tickets at successfull college programs:

Define “ridiculous.” Sports tickets aren’t food. People don’t HAVE to buy them. But they do for the prices they cost. Sounds like good business to me. Ridiculous is expecting a free market to make something cheaper because other people thing it’s stupid while others are more than happy to fork over their money for it.
