BATTLE: Collateral Damage

Battle Concept: You’ve just landed a big client, and what they want from you is a new set of collateral with a fresh and exciting new brand for their company.

Your job is to create a logo for the company, a business card, letterhead and envelope treatment.

Specifics:

1: The name of the company you’re branding is LandingGear, Inc. - a manufacturer and producer of high-end sports footwear.

2: Logo can be as many colors or any style you want, but must fit into the following criteria:

Works in 1, 2, 3 and 4 colors without the design of the logo changing; If you design a 1 color - that’s fine, if you design a 4 color in Photoshop, you must make sure it scales well without you going back to the drawing board for anything but color reduction.

Logo Must work in the following dimensions: 600x600, 200x200, and 80x80
3: Logo Must complete logo, letterhead, business card and envelope designs; all three may look different, but feel cohesive as a consistent brand

4: Other collateral materials must adhere to the following corporate standards:
[] Letterhead: 8.5x11 inches
[
] Envelope: Standard business 8 7/8 x 3 7/8 inches #9 envelope

Business Card: Standard 3.5x2 inches, vertical or horizontal
Tools: Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Quark, Flash, Freehand, or Fireworks - basically, any industry-standard program used for this sort of thing.

That’s about it! Anyone interested?

wow, you want to create the whole company image huh!! something seems fishy to me tho… :sure: must be my paranoia

I’m with you on this one, Mak…something just doesn’t smell right…

It’s paranoia :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know of any company named LandingGear, Inc. - or any companies that make footwear. I had the idea for the battle, looked around my room, and saw a pair of shoes - and thought of the company type. Then, the name, was something I thought gave a lot of different options for a logo and look - because there are so many different ways you can express the concept.

As a designer, one of my favorite things to do is design logos and collateral. I think it’s an artform that many don’t recognize, and it has very specific restrictions to apply it in the real world.

Many designers can create a cool logo - but do you have the ability to make that logo look great in all of the executions it will have? Will it work with cheap printing methods? Will it look good small, for websites or business cards?

At first I was just going to do a logo contest, but chose to go a little further to add some itneresting, “real world” restrictions to the battle.

Don’t be so cynical

Interesting…

Would definately be interesting… but it would seem too much like work after doing about the tenth thing and remembering that this is only for ****s and giggles.

But on the otherhand, i like your portfolio site, great work. And I’m sure that you could easily do all this yourself so there’s no need to scam someone into it. (above?)

i would be down with it if i didn’t have so many things to do…if it were more like…2 logos, light/dark…letterhead…i would definately do it…

just a suggestion…=)

Thank you

Saying such a thing myself would come off unbelievably conceited, but if I needed such a logo and collateral, I’d do it myself. Afterall, my portfolio isn’t served by someone else doing my work for me :geek:

When I get the chance, I’ll do one of these myself, and hopefully that will get the battle going

Q

Lounge: Hmm, if people agree with you, then I may just change the battle rules to support that.

Allright, well, here’s my entry :frowning: :

For the logo, I wanted to do something that represented the name of the company, but wasn’t too on the nose. I wanted it to work well as a logo - so that if you wanted to remove the word from it, you could, but still look cool. Additionally, I wanted it to be unique, in the sense that it would be memorable if you saw it on the product - in this case, a shoe.

Yellow is a great color, and one that not all companies would be able to pull off. However, in this instance, with the company being a hip, on-the-edge shoe company, yellow was the perfect color to utilize in both the colored logo as well as on the letterhead and business cards. It worked as an embellishment, as well as the main background for collateral.

Now, because of the “sports” oriented nature of the business, I wanted to include a sports figure somehow. Photographs were out of the question, because an endorsement by anyone in particular would be odd. People grow up, fall out of favor, and so on, so instead I created a “mascot” of sorts in Ilustrator, one that could be easily adapted in any color I chose, in any style I chose, and would be exciting to look at. Immediately, when looking at him, you get the sense of motion, excitement, and the “cleverness” of the company name comes into play.

Yellow is such a color that black ink works well on it during print, and the coloring is supposed to be easier on a viewers eyes when reading text. Not as “blinding”, afterall.

Finally, on the business cards, I wanted to do something unique and something that fit the company - so I went with “faux” player cards. A drawing of the employee would be done by the art department, the employees hire number would be placed on the card, as well as a blurb about him and his work. The cards capture the spirit and essence of the company, while simultaneously being exciting and memorable.

So, there we go. Hope somebody else chooses to enter the battle

very nice job, i like the logo…simple yet very explanitory as to the companys purpose

some great work bleutuna, n1
love your portfolio site too m8

Thanks, but I wish I could get some folks to join the battle :chinaman:

hehe, yeah, next time make sure you get some opponents first

yeah…well it wasn’t ever an official battle…it has to be okayed by a mod first…and the official rules have to be layed out…

True, but it can’t be an official battle until folks agree to participate

So I hoped doing an example would spawn some others to join in. Oh well, I had fun either way :beam:

great job bleutuma! =) :A+:

and plz don´t take any ofense by what mak and alethos posted, they have their reasons… there were a few guys that done that in the past.

obviously, not your case

LoungeAct, you said if I lightened the restrictions you’d be “down” with the battle :cowboy:

So…

hey bleutuna, i would love to enter the battle though i’m too busy with work. :frowning:
Just wondering if i could comment on your stationary.Hope thats kool with you.

The logo: Nice! Straight up nice! One problem though, at first i thought the logo was for a car company then after reading the text, i thought it was for a flying company. But with supporting imagery like the baller you have after on the business card supports what the logo is for. Nice work on the colours 2, i agree you would be able to get away with yellow with this company

letterhead: Nice layout. though is this going to be a 4 colour letterhead?

Business cards: Nice idea , double sided , 4 colour again. Not sure about the employee profile though, nice little info on them but i’m pretty sure that employees would not want to be titled by there employeed number.

All in all , nice work on layouts, very well thoughtout, not too sure about the colours, as you seem to be using 4 colours in all medias. In my opinion when the logo is 2 colour, the company would want a 2 colour stationary to go with it , saves the company heaps of money.

Great work!
