Callin anyone! i need some good advice!

aight fellow kirupas… heres the story. i created a website in flash and the studio where i did my practicum at wants the files. i sent only the .swfs because they said they wanted to take a look at them to change content around and stuff. however, my boss told me he wants the .fla’s now too.

i’m feelin kinda “iffy” about that situation…i need some feedback! would you give the .flas? and why not if you didnt.

could you please give me some advice and let me know what you would do. thnx!!

rosie.:q:

the heck… no, what business does he have looking through the fla?

Thats kind of like asking to see the recipe of a krispy kreme donut after buying one.
Absolutely no!

Did you get paid for the work? Also, does the studio have a policy where any work done inside its halls for its clients are the property of the studio?

EDIT: If you got paid for it, and the studio has a policy where work for its clients are backed up within their own walls, you may want to ask the studio why they want to use the FLAs.

Make them sign a form that states you own the fla’s

Thats communistic!

aight… i did the site www.starcaderecords.com for a company. the company owns this record label as well. when i asked why they wanted the .flas it was kind of a shady answer. he said the he knows a little on flash and he wants to see if he can change it himself.

but i feel like i’m in no position to say no or something you know. i dont want my boss thinking “ok rosie, your not the best… just let me take alook at them kinda ting…”

but i dont feel comfortable giving away the .fla. whats a good way to say it?

simple.

they own the source (.fla), you are obligated to give it up.

nothing you do is unique, or hasn’t been done before, so it is best to get over it, and if you are going to get paid for Flash, get used to giving up the .fla.

Rev

Since you work for the company and do the work on their time, in their business than yah - it’s all their property.

But if you were say, on contract and did the work from home and havent signed a contract stating that anything you do for them INCLUDING source code will be sole possison of theirs, than I would definatly not give it to them without a price tag attached. Dudeman is right - you can’t go out for dinner and expect to get the recipe if you like it.

We are going through this at work right now, where they had some work out sourced before I started here and now that we want the source code they wont give it to us… lawyers are involved and everything. It’s crazy stuff.

<b>charge more</b> because that probably means good-bye for the future jobs-for these ppl! And you need a good reason to give the .flas!

yes sir, i had this issue before myself. if they “paid” you then they own it. they own the website, now what good is that if they don’t have the source files. think about it, if you would have done in the html and php, they woud have the source files correct? they have every right to them, your going to have to give them up. also why are don’t you want to give them the .fla’s? i mean it’s a cool site and all but as Rev said, it’s been done and can be duplicated with out the source files. anyway nice job on the site but send em those .fla’s cuz they will make you
