I thought just over a year ago that I would have plenty of A3 printing to do so I bought the canon i6500 for $850 AU
But it turned out I didn’t need it, and in the last year I would have printed about 250 A4 pages as I still have 1/2 of the 500 reem I bought.
last week i printed something, this week it has stopped working. The carrage appears to be jamed.
Being just over 1 year the warranty has expired by a few months.
Canons trouble shooting says take it in for repair, I tryed to force it by hand but I thought I might snap something so stopped. I am hoping it might only cost $100 to fix.
So this is what it has cost me for 1 year with this printer.
printer $850
ink x3 $120
repairs $100
Total $1070 AU
So this works out to $4.28 per A4 page providing it can be repaired for $100 bucks.
Needless to say I am not happy…
My old BJC4200 would have printed over 3000 pages easy before I gave it away in working order.
I have a canon s520. It’s ugly as hell, but it works really nicely. If I remember correctly it could print up to 8.5" wide and was reasonably cheap as well.
what I’m saying is you could sell the other one, and then buy one of those, hide it under the desk (because it’s not the best looking) and still make a reasonable profit!
Well I figured since I didn’t have to worry about warranty I would pull it apart, and in doing so managed to fix it.
In the off chance someone else has trouble with their i6500 I will tell how I fixed it.
Pull the case off by pressing in all 7 tabs (1 is on front centre)
On the right hand side there is a white carage lock, press this down and slide carage to centre (note you have to put your hand around back to get to it)
My problem ( there are clear plastic tabs that scrap clean the bottom of the carage when it is returned to rest position, the one that faces parallel to the carage was on a slight angle. Pulling it out showed that one of the corners must have touched the gears )
The printer was still jammed at this point.
There is a tray that moves back and forth over the ink pads that the carage rests on. manually move this back away from the ink pads. You have to tilt it slightly to get it to unlock.
Thats it, it should now be unjammed…
And I have no doubt that this 2 cent part would have cost me $100 dollars just to have it removed. Hell they could have said they had to replace a motor and I would have never known any better.
