Cell Shading Picture Effect?

Hi Guys,

I just played a game called XIII and I just love the graphics used for this game, I’m obsessed with style. I was wondering if there was a way (easy or hard) to take a standard picture of a person and use photoshop to make it look sorta like the cell shading that is in the game. Does that make sense? Is it possible? Is there a tut I can follow? I would really like to learn how to take standard digitial photos and make them look kinda comic like. Any help on this would be most apprciated. I doubt you can copy the exact effect but I’m sure Photoshop can mimic the idea and make it look cool.

I’ve done it here as a more manga / anime style, but you can adapt it to suit whatever you like really.

Basically I use Illustrator to make the line art borders (so trace your photo here), then Photoshop to add the colour. Drop me a PM if I can be of any more assistance.

man I saw a sweet cell shading tut for doing it all in vector (which is what I would suggest). I will see if I can find it.

here ya go!
think this is the one you were talking about DDD.

that is a cool way too…But I would do it in Illustrator so you can use the valuable pathfinder tools.

Hey thanks guys. I will give both these tuts a go and see what I can come up with. I’m fairly new to this scene so my guess I will get stuck on something and probably have to post it here again. I really appreciate the help, hopefully I can pull this off and show you what I came up with. Basically I want to take some pics of friends I know etc and make them look kinda comic/anime like. I will let you know if I need more help but both these tuts from a quick glance look like they could help a great deal. I don’t have Illustrator yet, what is the latest version of that - I might need to get it for some other stuff (tuts) I’m working on since I’m a newbie in this field. Thanks again.

Cheers,

Ras.

Illustrator CS is the absolute most up-to-date version of it, but I’m still using 10 with no problems.

Whichever program you end up using, it’s probably going to involve the Pen tool. The tricky part with that is learning how the Bezier curves work. Well, it took me a while to figure out, anyway. But they’re great for getting perfectly curved lines that you can’t really do freehand.

Ok, thanks for that - I will look into that because from the looks of things, Illustrator comes in handy a lot with all the tuts I’ve been reading. I will see how I go in Photoshop for now. Cheers for all the help.
