Ignore this if you don’t know anything about IPods in Toronto.
Anybody here know any good places to get 40 GB IPods in Toronto/GTA? I’m thinking Pacific Mall, but I don’t think I can haggle well enough there to get a good price, plus I don’t know any Chinese. The Apple Store’s selling them for $399USD ($515CAD) - but I’d have to pay shipping and handling plus customs. I can get them at the U of T bookstore for $519CAD, which is the best I’ve been able to find so far. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (but no rewards because I’ll be broke after buying this IPod).
Well, i cant really help you on that, but I must say, them thar i-pods are pretty sweet My friend Eric has one…I like the type of navigation that it uses :thumb:
So far I’ve got nothing. I think I’ll have to go for the U of T one… It’s gonna be pretty cool though, my boyfriend and I are sharing it instead of buying a house or a cat or something. Hehe… Does anyone here have a 40 gig one? I just want to know what a decent price is…
I was looking into grabbing an iPod a few weeks back, but after doing a bit of research I found that the iRiver H120 or H140 (sometimes called the iHP120 and iHP140) had more features. The H120 at 20GB is what I eventually got, for about CDN$469 at Future Shop. The HP140 is 40GB, but I dunno how much it costs.
The features such as built-in FM tuner, included backlit LCD display remote, full compatibility with WinAmp playlists, and the ability to record MP3s on the fly made it a sweeter deal than the iPod. Check out http://www.iriveramerica.com/
The only con I see is that the main unit controls aren’t cool touchpads like the iPod has, and the unit is not as cool-looking. But I don’t mind it that much since I control everything with the remote.
alethos, how is your iH120 in terms of energy consumption? Is it better than the 8-hour cycle an ipod has?
No, seriously, I bought a 10gb ipod last spring, and returned it within 10 days: that touch screen drains too much battery. I’m back with my old cd player which reads mp3’s but can’t fast forward or rewind (and thus if you shut it down in the middle of a tune, when you re-open it you have to start the tune back from the start). It’s worth like 90$ (CAN), but I find it better in terms of quality/price ratio than an ipod.
hifi - have you tried searching other online resellers? Places like http://www.pricewatch.com are pretty good, and I’m not sure how much extra they charge for shipping a few miles further north of the US/Canada border?
The H120 is rated at 16hrs of playback on a full charge. Realistically I’d say you could get 10-12hrs of playback on a full charge, considering backlight power usage and several on/off cycles. That’s much better than the iPod, I’d say. However, I have only run it for about 6hrs max between charges since I usually use the AC adaptor when transferring files (and I do that often as I use the H120 as a portable harddrive…who has 20GB of mp3’s anyway?!).
My only complaints are related to aesthetics. It’s not the prettiest MP3 player out there, but because of the LCD remote I rarely have to look at the main unit.
Hifi: try the following avenues if you want cheap electronics in TO:
haggle at the electronics stores on Yonge, south of Bloor
I’ve never bought anything but food at Pacific Mall, but it looks like a good place to haggle
As for buying online, I find that eBay prices look good at first, but when you factor duties/taxes plus shipping/insurance, the price is the same as if you bought it retail in town.
Thanks a lot guys. I don’t want a used iPod, and I’d rather not buy one online if I can help it, so I’m going to go check out the stores downtown this weekend. Otherwise, I’ll probably either go the online route or get a H140.
Alright, we’re deciding to go and pick up an H120 tomorrow, which will hold us for awhile (we each have about 700-1000 songs - CDs included). Apparently, Future Shop is letting people replace their 120s with 140s once they get them in stock.
Alethos- What kind of voice recording capabilities does it have? Does it only let you record up to a certain amount of minutes or does it let you take up the whole hard drive if you like?
I know a great place to get an ipod in mississauga. I got mines for 250$ cdn at the chinese center in Mississauga i don’t know main intersection but it’s on dundas and it’ s the center that has the ancient chinese buildings look with a huge red gate at it’s entrance and a pond in the center. It’s called Lo-gai’s electronics. He said he got it from china and would let me have it for cheap it has the chinese box and chinese instructions but on the ipod It’s english and works fine. Had it for a couple months now. Go inside the mall the store is somewhere there
Futureshop is letting you replace the H120 with a H140 when they get them in? For free or for a fee to upgrade?
All I know about recording is that it accepts both analog and optical line-in, has an internal mic, as well as an external mic jack, and can record in WAV and MP3 format (I guess MP3 encoding is done on the fly). I haven’t read in any of the reviews of people complaining about short record time, so I assume you could fill the whole harddrive with one long recording if you wished.
Kay, that’s an amazing deal. I might have to swing by that store some time and check out what else they have.
Well, you have to buy the Future Shop warranty to have the replacement, which I don’t completely trust at the moment so I still have to check it out. As far as I know, yes, there’s a fee to upgrade, but I think it’s the difference between the cost of the H140 and the price you paid for the H120.
I won a digital camera a couple of days ago, i told my manager “since i already have a digital camera, can i replace this one with the ipod 20 gegs”. he says ok, and makes me pay the diffrence which is exactly $79
pacific mall is such a waste of time, dont get me started there…
my got his mini off www.ecost.com
dunno if its anygood but thought i might at least post it up
