Clean up my task manager

I have 43 processes running on my task manager even with no programs open and only like 4 things in my systray. Is there a way or tool to stop some of the services runnng in the bgrd if I dont need them? Some of them have weird extensions so I dont want to stop them manually but I am sure if I dont need 43 running when there is nothing running. please advise.
