Collaborative patchquilt

Hey everyone,

You might have seen this on other foums and I think it’s a cool idea.

Basically, there’s a grid of let’s say 16 squares/rectangles, that, when put together, makes one big picture. Each person participating gets a square and makes an image to incorporate into the final big picture. The way it works is that one person starts with the center square, then the next four people get only the edges of the center square, which they have to include in their square (that keeps the piece more cohesive so that no borders can be seen and each square flows into the other). After those four are done, they pass on their edges to the next people and so on until it’s done. Then you put it all together.

Of course this requires somebody to moderate. This person would be the only person who sees the whole piece as it is built up, and this person distributes the edges.

I want to take this further and allow flash files instead of just static images. Your edges would have to remain static, though, so that the other people could incorporate them.

So what do you all think? Would anybody be interested in participating? Would anybody want to moderate?

that would be cool, but one question… when its over, would it be one giant image… or just little images stuck together. cause ive seen on some sites, people submit there 50x50 patch, and they add it, and its not really made to join with the other ones.
you may have already said this, but i didnt really catch 100% what you were sayin :stuck_out_tongue:

sounds like a lot of work!:smirk:

To start, we’d probably only do a 3x3 or a 4x4 grid of squares. That way it would get done quicker so that we could see if it is even doable. Each square might be 150pixels X 150pixels. That would leave us with a 600x600pixel final piece if we did 4x4 squares. To display the final piece, all the squares would be stuck together so it looks like one image.

Hope that answers your question.

As for the difficulty of this undertaking, I think it should be quite easy. Each person only has to make a small 150x150pixel image/swf. The moderator would have the toughest time because he/she would have to distribute the edge pieces. If nobody wants to moderate I would do it. I can start things off with the center piece, and moderate from there.

ok, so lemme get this straight one more time (little slow)
say i started off with a rectangle that went right across my box… and the next person would have to join that box that i made, and connect it somehow to his picture?

is there anyway you could give an example?

You know what, I think an example would help explain. I’ll throw together a quick sketch when I get home from work tonight. It should make things a lot clearer.

let´s see the example, I´m curious

go to deviantART.com mosaics… its pretty much the same thing

Whoa if I had known they did it at deviantart, I’d just go there and join one. In fact, that’s what I will do! Anybody else who’s interested head on over!

Thanks Ryall!

no problem… they’re really fun to do over there, I’d suggest to all: GO CHECK EM OUT!
