For creating pleasing colour schemes a general rule of thumb (especially if you’re not a professional designer): simpler is better. One or two colours max.
While psychology and cultural norms do play into colour selection a general rule of thumb is one primary colour (think blue for Kirupa: logo, buttons, links) with a complementing secondary for accents (lighter blue for some elements on Kirupa).
