Cryptography MD5?

Ive always been quite interested in cryptography, having at one point making my own Vigenere Cipher in flash a few years back. Anyway, was just roaming around wikipedia, as you do when you bored, and was reading about MD5 hash’s. I’m a bit confused as to how they are useful in the cryptography world, as they are only 1 way. If you encode something into MD5, you cant turn it back into plain text can you? So how is that useful at all, expect for file checksums?

Anyway, was just wondering if anybody knew much about it. I find it quiet fascinating.
