Domains registration

hello,
when you guys buy domains… you buy domains in the company that will host your site or you buy them by yourself and then just redirect it to the company that you choosed to host your sites?
in case that you buy to the company that will host your site… which name will be in the domain? i mean… the administrative, and technical contact… will be the name of the company, right? so in case that you want to transfer one domain… if the webhosting company say that they want many $$ what will you do? and in case that the company goes bankrupt or closes forever… what will you do? theres any central company that control the .com domains?
No one likes to lost clients and when some companies know that one domain will be in charge by someone else they used to be pretty bad helping with the transfering.

another thing… i have a client that had one site made, registered and host by another company, and now it’s me how are redesigning it, and obvious i wanted to host it the company that host all my other sites and own the domain… but the old company at first wanted to charge 90$ for it and in the last talk i had with them they said that the domain was of them so they wont do nothing and just keep the domain for them :upset:.
theres anything that can be done?
i talked with the client about that and the solution we found was register the domain .pt as long as we are in portugal and this is the extension we have.
the domain .pt isn’t bad but we wanted the old domain anyway.
what can i do in this case? nothing? we can allways go to the justice and show the papers to prove that but a lawyer will be need and lots of money to have this done and will take so many time that when everything is done no one that used to visit the old site will remember about the odl domain anymore.
that’s it, can you guys give me some tips for this case and tell me how do you register new domains and stuff… if possible give me some urls and stuff…

As far as domains go they are owned by the person who has registered them I think, I could buy a domain off example.com and host it with other.com (those sites are examples). I think it would def be a good legal case I myself studied law for a few years and theres def something wrong with that, all depends on the original contract that was used.

if the company are being a real pain to co-operate then its up to you what route to take a)spend money to prove what you already know or 2)spend a fraction of the money it would take to prove your point and seperate all ties and move on.

I think in this case as we’re only talking about a domain I’d just forget about it.
