Dotted line in PS7 or FWMX

Does anyone know how to draw a dotted line in either fireworks or PS7? I feel like a b00b asking this but I cannot seem to find the option.

a work around is to add a texture (such as line_vert3) to the line tool…

I’m still trying to remember if I have ever needed to do that…

I wanted it to be a transparent gif. I am using it as a divider in a htm page. So the gaps will be the same color as the bgrd.

HAHA paint shop pro does without a work around. Go figure. The $50 program has that feature. Where the big boys dont. And who said paint shop pro sux. the ability to make dotted lines is worth $50.

Hey rev let me know if you figure out a work around.

try using the paint brush tool, add a texture to that…

you get a dotted line with transparent gaps…

unless I don’t understand (quite poss)

Just a skinny 1px line but it has to be dotted on a transparent bgrd. It is so much easir to create it paint shop pro 7. It is amazing that is not a property of the line tool in either program.

I thought there was one, as well…

you can make the brush tool 1 px hard… but that is best work around…

I will let you know if I find one better…

You only have to do this once:

  1. Create a new image that is 1 pixel wide and 3 pixels tall. (Note: you can edit these dimentions depending on how much space you want between the dotted lines. This is for a vertical line. For a horizontal line, make the new image 3 pixels wide and 1 inch tall)

  2. Using the pencil tool add a single pixel to either the top or bottom (it doesn’t make a difference).

  3. Select all and then Edit > Define pattern.

Now, let’s use the new pattern to construct a dotted VERTICAL line.

  1. Using the horizontal line marquee tool, select the area you want the line to appear. If you want it to be a thin line, make sure the selection is only one pixel wide.

  2. Edit > Fill. In “Contents” use “Pattern” from the drop down menu and select the pattern you made above.

  3. Voila! Instant dotted line. The pattern should be stored so in the future, it’ll be easier to create dotted lines.

I hope this made sense…

wow! yeah i was thinking about saying something along those lines…but not to that extend. but you could just use flash…i think they have it…

flash has it but it’s not as clean…

Ren i found a bug in your method. if you do a 1x2 px image, you will be filling the whole thing. so do a 1x3 if you want a 1px space or a 1x4 if you want a 2 px space.

ren my bad, i didnt see that it did say 1x3. but fyi 3d this will make a square dot…

I thank you guys for the work around. But Paint Shop Pro not only does it but it has many styles of dotted lines. I will keep the other work arounds in mind. I still say it is amazing that they did not think to put a dotted line tool or make it a property of the line tool.

don’t say that too loud…

MM will come out with a new version…

It is funny you say that I have fw3 and fw4 and the dotted line is not on those either. I guess they are anti-dotted line. But freehand has it not sure about illustrator

Yup - Illustrator has it.

You can accomplish many different “lines styles” with Photoshop. The tools are there, you just have to know how to use it.

I did extensive research there is not a dotted line tool. Only the work arounds presented here. or a brush. but no dotted line tool

another way to work around the problem is by using hyphens:

and then by rotating it vertically…

but i think that that would loose to much quality. your best bet is to use what Ren recomended. it looks great. and they almost look round.

Again there is no “dotted line tool” specifically but there are basic tools to make dotted lines. It’s really easy… I guess you have to be a good trouble shooter and know your photoshop really well.

i used a wider version of rens suggestion:
