Ive never tried that, specifically, but…
i gotta question, how do i get the DVD on my comp to work? i got interactual but when i put the dvd in my dvd drive, it dont work… any suggestions?
What is interactual?
YOu need a program to play DVDs such as WinDVD or something. I don’t have a dvd player on my comp so I don’t know the software :-\
yes it did, InterActual Player, its like it doesnt read the dvd. my neighbor has the same problem, yet my friends works…
The problem with capturing screens off a DVD is that most if not all DVDs use Macrovision copy protection. Which means you will get green blocks, or very distorted images if you try and capture from a Video capture device, or even through WinDVD (or any other software player) The best way I have found to do wwhat it is you are attempting to do is to use a few different programs. First off, you can use smart ripper to rip the VOB (Video Object) Files off the DVD. Warning: This requires an incredable amount of spare HDD space. An average 2 hour show has between 6-9GB of data depending on how many language audio tracks are embedded in the VOB. Now, with smartripper you can rip only what chapters you want, so if you know what chapter the scene is in that you wish to capture then rip only that chapter and you will save a bunch of time.
After ripping the VOB’s off the DVD you need a way to look at the data. In steps DVD2AVI, load up the program open the VOB in it and you can step frame by frame through the clip. Most NTSC DVDs are produced from the original film by a process called telecine (3:2 pulldown). This means that some frames will be interlaced with the next frame. So, you might have to skip around a bit to find a non-interlaced frame (every third frame or so should be a full frame). When you find the frame you want you can export the frame to a graphics format. I can’t recall of the top of my head exactly how to export the frame to the clipboard right now. I will edit this post when I get home and have the software in front of me.
Here is the link to get the software mentioned…
http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SR241.rar (SmartRipper)
http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Decoders/DVD2AVI_176.zip (DVD2AVI)
It is all freeware.
Let me know if you have further questions. Its nice to have a question I can answer. =o)

any ideas about how to get my player to work?
Phil,

Those links should work for you. While in DVD2AVI you should be able to export the current frame by going unter the option menu and choosing export bitmap, or by hitting the “b” key.

it just stays black screen. the DVD works on XBOX.
Ok, lets see… Gonna need a bit more info to solve this one. =O)
After you rip the DVD with smart ripper you should have one huge (or small depending how much you ripped) xxxxxxx.vob file. Then when you open this file in DVD2AVI and move the slider around you get nothing but a black screen? Remember to make sure the remove Macrovision box is checked on Smartripper. If it still is not working, here is what I suggest… Update your video drivers, and as silly as it sounds update DirectX as well. There are some weird video codecs that install with DirectX and that might solve your problem. Also you may want to try uninstalling “Irfanview” as it never worked in the first place. If all that still doesn’t work post your system specs and we can delve deeper into the issue. =O)

SOmetimes the DVD software will have a screeen capture tool built in. I know mine does.
As Far as that Inter-whatever, i hate that program, i always had problems.
I personally use Power DVD from Cyberlink.
It has that screen capture function you’re looking for. And its alot better than ripping it JUST for 1 picture, kinda excessive and takes a long time.
And most DVD software dont work with a simple “Print Screen” because they are ussually using some software acceleration like DX which can Make itself invisible to the print screen.
So use some software that will capture images, such as Power DVD =)
Will that work for Macrovision’d DVDs as well? or do you still get the green blocks all over the place? I rip DVDs for other reasons than screen captures so I have not used PowerDVD, but I know WinDVD has problems with copy protected DVDs and screen/clip capturing. =O)
Cheers!

well all the DVD’s ive ever played on my computer can capture the screen just fine. Not too sure Macrovision… well actually… yea. I believe so, just remembered that Macrovision logo does appear on some of my DVDs.
And as far as i know, works fine =)
