Fellow Brits...help me out

I’ve got a thread in the job seekers section that hasn’t had any response yet. And I think I now why. Looking at the job offers section 85% of the jobs are in the states and the other 15% are in mainland Europe. Either that or I’m just not that an exciting propisition.

Now I’m not going to ask about job sites, I’ve looked at everyone, but what I was going to ask is does anyone know of a British based forum (perhaps similar to this one) which might be able to help me :h:

Sort of forum for british developers/designers that might have a job offers section. Any ideas would be appreciated :thumb:

Hi Rab - sorry to hear of your predicament; I’m sure you’ll get through it  Any update to give us?

I’ve always found that targetting businesses is difficult - not only do you have to sell you, you have to sell the advantages of the internet. You don’t want to be asked by a restaurant how many more bookings they’ll get if you design their website.

Don’t beat your head against the wall thinking of which market sector will work for you - I strongly suggest you design an A5 flier, then walk, walk, walk. Forget the World Wide Web; think, Holyrood, Leith, Newtown, Stockbridge - all massively thriving multi-industry business communities.

I just lost the Edinburgh Hogmanay website bid by 3 (yes, three) points - but that’s how I got in; Shanks’ Pony.

If you can afford £90 per year, subscribe to The Drum (http://www.thedrum.co.uk/) - a great magazine which has the benefit of being the only trade journal that some design agencies advertise in

Thanks Cello, I’m trying but it’s hard

Money was getting a bit tight so I’ve had to take a job in…JJB Sports selling trainers. Pretty p***ed off about it but it had to be done, I like having a roof and some walls to go with them.

I’ve got my CV with a few companies who might get in touch soon with some freelance jobs so fingers crossed. I was going to target some local estate agents but first I’ll take your advice and come up with a flier, probably even stick the design in comment & critique for you all to see. Good idea :thumb:

I’ll probably tweak the design of my site as well. I usually check the jobs on the drum web site but I have seen the magazine too, might get a subscription later but just now the 90 pounds means more.

Thanks for the help Cello, appreciated

Us Glasweigans have to stick together

ello Rab, sorry to hear of your cirumstances although perhaps it will console you a little to hear that I am in a similar situation. I was made redundant about 5 weeks ago and have only about 4 weeks left to get myself another job before money runs out.

As far as I can tell when you’re young and (relativly) inexperienced you’ve just got to get you name/details with as many people as possible and take what you can. So far I’ve applied to something like 20 jobs and 200 agencies and have only had one or two people come back to me with anything thats come close to getting me a new job. I’d say getting your CV out to people is more important than trying to tweak your portfolio any.

This is of course what suits my circumstances best and doesn’t necessarily apply so much to you.

I am mostly working with www.jobserve.co.uk

I check each day what new jobs in my area have come in and also they have a large directory of IT agencies which I am working my way through slowly:

hope this helps =)

thanks m_andrews808

Jobserve is the best but CWJobs.co.uk, TotalJobs.co.uk, BBC.co.uk/jobs and jobsite.co.uk are good to

Actually the BBC one is pretty poor if you’re anywhere other than London but if I remember correctly you live close to London and they are always looking for developers/designers

post on my fourm
