Hey guys…
This is a pretty random development problem, but here it is in the best way I can explain it:
You know how windows sometimes locks files so that you can’t rename or delete them? Most often this is due to that file being open in another application. When you close all related applications, most times windows will allow you to rename or delete the file. Sometimes, however, even after closing all applications, windows still will not allow you to rename or delete the file and you have to restart your computer in order to do what you want.
The problem I am having with Firefox is very similar.
I swear this is driving me bonkers. This is only a problem with Flash content. What happens is when I embed a .swf into my site, once Firefox loads it into memory (cache) I can not go back to flash and update the file. If I make changes and try to re-export, no luck! Essentially, Firefox is “locking” the flash file into memory and thus not allowing me to overwrite the version it is referencing. Flash error message:
Of course I have simply tried clearing the cache in Firefox under tools > clear private data, but I have also gone further…
I have gone to the about:config page in Firefox and set browser.cache.memory.enable to false, and I have also set browser.cache.check_doc_frequency to 2 in hopes of preventing Firefox from caching anything, but it is not working.
Long story short, in order to continue development, I have to restart the computer each time I make changes in order to clear the cached file out of memory. Such a workflow disruption that I have to do the unthinkable and resort to development in IE, which does not lock the file.
I’ve searched the Web far and wide but haven’t heard of others having the issue. Does anyone have a suggestion to share?
Thanks in advance,
Fitz
