First "G-phone" released

The wait is finally over, and the rumors are true; T-Mobile has just announced the release of G1, the first Android-powered mobile phone. It has many advanced smart phone features and some downright cool technology (Google maps with street view; move the phone to look around), but the most important and groundbreaking feature is the OS itself.

Anybody with Java programming knowledge can create an app to either sell or distribute for free. The T-mobile app store has promised to leave all apps available from the store, even VOIP programs that would allow users to bypass the minute restrictions of their phone service plan.

I’m really excited about the impending release, but I’d like your opinion on it. Here’s a great New York Times article about the G1 (if you don’t already know all about it.)
