is there any possible way to save what is written in an input box to an existing text file whilst retaining the originl text files content aswell?
I think you would have to do that through PHP. Run a search, Jubba has answered a question similar as this one a little time ago.

Search php flash shoutbox (google) and you’ll get the script used to write to a txt, its really simple so it should be a good learning experience for you… it was for me
