I few days ago I posted about runtime errors. I got sick of them I decided to try and format. However, I couldn’t find the driver floopy disk for my ethernet card (god know where it is - I have looked EVERYWHERE), so I decided to just reinstall windows 98 on top. I have done this before with no problems.
Runtime errors seem to have stopped, but I am now trying to download Yahoo messenger - All my friends and family use it, but it keeps giving me a kernel32.dll problem.
How do I replace Kernel32.dll? I downloaded one off the net it keeps saying there is a sharing violation or that it is in use?
Furthermore parts of my windows 98 is now in a foreign language, German I think. No idea why, it is a 100% legitimate copy.
If I do a full format I lose everything, and can’t drive my ethernet card I don’t think…
The drivers for the card are installed now, does anybody know how I could locate them and put them onto a floppy?
Yeah that would be a good idea and what I initially considerred doing. However, I have the box for the card, it doesn’t say a manufacturer let alone have a website.
I got it from my university.
dude, kernel32.dll is a major dll file for windows, you can’t simply change it. you might want to extract it from your windows 98 cd. the compressed file on the cd should be called something like “KERNEL32.DL_”, if my mind serves me correctly. you can’t simply rename this file, you have to uncab it. there’s some documentation in the same directory on how to do this. if not, let me know and i’ll try to find out.
if that doesn’t work, reinstall windows. since it’s windows 98, you won’t lose your documents, just your settings, which isn’t such a big deal, and some drivers. all in all, you should update your copy of windows.
windows 2000 is much faster than 98, though it’s a pretty big jump. you have to be prepared to go from 98 to 2000. it’s not as user-friendly as 98 is. at one time i had both on my computer at the same time so if i didn’t feel like 98 i’d do 2000, and vice versa.
yeah, I know its faster, but I am so comfortable with 98 Iknow it inside and out… so I’ll stick with it until I feel comfortable enough to go to linux or unix…
I have that same problem, when i’m on the internet, and I have windows ME. I just move it to the corner and keep working, but I can’t shut down right…
I have had windows ME for a couple of years…tired of it…need new system. But who knows, my computer’s like 4 or 5 years old anyways, with like $300 worth of stuff done to it.
Windows 98 has been suprisingly stable for me for the last 5 years, so I have stuck with it. I had major problems with ME and XP home, couldn’t get XP Pro to install, so I just went back to 98.
