Help: Component called wrong method

This may sound like a weird problem, but I think that I must be missing something subtle in the way components work. I use several components throughout my movie, most have assigned handlers, but for some reason, when I started making new object methods, any component that I used would call my custom method in additioon to its handler. This is one of the methods that gets called inappropriately. Both the method and the component are in the root timeline.

Object.prototype.translateProtein = function(npname, npnumber) {
	//...
	}

any ideas as to what’s going on, or how I can get rid of it?
