Help! (more maya stuff)

hi all

i got my building thingy done… and saved my finished product. Now today i’ve re-opened the file, and it’s missing some of my work :frowning: i’m SURE i saved before i exited, and now i can’t find some of the objects. Even weirder, each of my saves has something different missing…

when i look at the hypergraph (i don’t really know what it does but i know it’s got the different objects…) i can find the missing piece, and select it, but i can’t actually see it in the workspace. I’ve tried moving or resizing it, but i can’t get it…

anyone know what my problem might be? the missing pieces are fairly normal. They started off as curves and were then ‘lofted’ so they became named as “extrudedSurface blah blah” or in one case “Bevel Polygon 1” (it has a bevel on it)

please help… i don’t have a copy of the outline anywhere so if i can’t find it i’ll have to change my design because i can’t perfectly recreate the original design :frowning:

thanks
Stuart

hmm…

i’ve been mucking around with stuff and i found a reason why the object disappeared (i think)

it was a curve which i then treated with a bevel plus modifier. The result of this was a new object, and the original curve remained as well… this kept getting in the way so i just deleted it. But i think that when i then open the file later, both are missing… are they linked in some way?

if so, what do you do so it doesn’t keep gettting in the way?

thanks
Stuart

If you didnt delete the history on the beveled geometry then deleting the profile curves will delete the shape that is made from it. Reason being is that you can edit the curve changing the end result geometry through using history. So when you have finished with the curve and made your geometry from it, select the geometry and go to edit / delete by/ history.

Now you can delete your curves or you can make a layer and add the curves to a layer, maybe use them later , if you dont want the curves to be seen at the moment hide the layer .

are you using incremental saves?

uhh i don’t know what you mean… if you mean i’m saving into different files when i make changes, yes.

Sorry i can’t be of more help :stuck_out_tongue:

Coolidge is talking about a feature in maya 4.5 that you can save in increments, you can find it at, file/save and click on the option box, theres a tick box to turn on increment saves, what it does is that whever you press save , and say your scene was called room, it would save it room001, then next time you press save it will be room002, and so on. but since your not using this, its not where your problem is, did you read up my theory?

:::increment saves stops you from pressing “save as” always, pretty helpfull :).
