Here are the fitness trackers I actually recommend

Why do you want a fitness tracker.

What gets me with fitness trackers is the data trail, not the step count.

The “data trail” part is why I’ve never stuck with a tracker for long — half of them basically want you to make an account and turn on location-ish permissions.

When you say they “want you to make an account and turn on location-ish permissions, ” which permission was the dealbreaker for you — like background location specifically, or just the general “always allow” prompt? I might be wrong here.

The one that always trips me is when they won’t sync unless location is on, even though I’m not using GPS workouts.

Yeah that drives me nuts too — it feels like they’re using “location” as a lazy permission bucket for bluetooth scanning, not because you’re actually tracking a run. i usually flip it on just during the initial pairing/sync, then turn it back off and it’ll behave for a while.

Look — “turn it on just for pairing” works until the app updates and quietly re-prompts, so I treat it like a recurring audit item. I’ve seen people leave it on forever because the prompt wording is basically permission fatigue.
