Holographics in Maya?

Hello all,
anyone know how to make holographic style menus in Maya like the ones in Final Fantasy or Star Wars?

Thanks!

post an example if you can. Is this for web??

like this guys ‘demo reel’.
I mean, I dont expect to come up with something as good as his on the first try, but at least start off in the right direction.

Regarding the Final Fantasy hologram, check the attachment.

Off the top of my head, to get this effect would need some multi layer textures, using transparencies. Maybe something like cinema where you can import quicktimes onto geometry. it could even be a post production effect , done in programs such as Inferno. Flame , after effects, flint, combustion.

yikes!
:hangover:

yup could be PP effects - but can definitely be down inside the proggy… Using as soulty said transparent layers - with some glow and probably l’il lights around…

why not just make a texture in PS for it? then just texture that one part…

you have to think about the animation that happens in the holographic interface, a texture is all good for static images, but like the link posted, looking towards more for motion graphics.

ohh i thought he ment it was just going to be a static image. well if it was gonna be moving then i have no clue! sorry

Deff post production I cannot think of a good way to get it to look convincing otherwise. Not sure about about maya but you can in 3ds but it wont be that convincing. Sorry could not be more help.

no need to apologize-
I really do appreciate everyones advice and help. :cowboy:

If you can get hold of Cinema 4d, i remember a friend of mine created a object that he placed instead of a texture file he could import a quicktime file, if i remember correctly he said he could import flash as well, so what he had was a womens face , with this head gadget on, with a lcd screen which was like geometry, and had motion animation (things like type and shapes-circle and stuff the usual spacy interface) running over the curves front of this lcd glasses looking curved profile rectangle.

There is always a way to do it, you just have to find it, maybe that cinema way could be a alternative.

best of luck

Hey coolidge, i asked your question at 3d buzz.com this is what some people replied , not much different than what was already said but check it out anyway, might help

Thanks man,
I really do appreciate all the extra time you have given my question. Hopefully, I can produce something worth posting.

p.s. I’m running Maya 5

my guess in maya would be to create a nurbs plane make it translucent, change the color then add incadescene. and as for adding images or text I would create it in photoshop save it as a tiff with an alpha channel and just import it onto maya and mess around with the glow, transparency or incandesence to get the right image you want.

hop this helps

Cool: how did oyu get your hands on Maya 5?! I went to a convention and saw it and was awe struck

let’s just say…it’s an evaluation copy.

I dont want to make any ‘illegal monies’ from it, I just want to learn, get real good, get hired by a video game company, and let them pay for it!

(I know, I’m very optimistic about getting hired.)
