Did anyone else see the (pilot) show? I ment to post about it on tuesday when I saw it - but I didn’t and didn’t get around to it anytime afterwards until now.
Anyway, it’s a new show on FOX that I’d been waiting about a month to see, after I saw a commercial for it on Spike. It’s a combination ER/CSI with some comedy. It’s about a doctor “Gregory House” who’s very antisocial. He generally dislikes dealing with people. His motivation as a doctor is the challenge of curing a disease, and to him a patient is just another obsticle in the way. He’s witty and brilliant, dispencing sharp wit to any that bother him. The doctor walks with a cane and pops painkillers every now and again because he suffered muscle death in his right thigh - which is probably why he’s so bitter.
The episode that was aired Tuesday (and repeated Friday) had many great incidents. One of which, showed a pateint who came in saying that he was suffering from chronic fatigue or something of that nature, and did research on the internet about it, leading Dr. House to believe it was all in his head (you know, another one who’s read a medical dictionary, spots a disease that has symptoms similar to something that they think they’re experiencing and is thus convinced that they have said disease. There’s a term for all that, but I can’t remember). Anyway, so the doctor wants to shut this guy up. He says “You know what, I think I may just have something for it. You stay right here” The doctor then leaves the room, hobbles down the hall to the perscription counter, grabs a container of pills, empties the pills into his pocket and says to the nurse “Have change for $1?” He takes the change, heads over to the candy machine, and buys some mints that look like pills, fills the bottle and delivers them to the “patient”. Later on, at the end of the episode, you see Dr. House with the rest of his team discussing the patient they just cured (who was a particularly difficult case) when a nurse enters the room and says “Dr. House, there’s a patient outside who wants to speak with you” the doctor leans back and looks out the window of the office into the hall and spots the man from before at the reception desk looking somewhat disgruntled. He turns back to the nurse who says “He was asking about a repeat perscription”. The doctor smiles and turns to the team and says “Anybody have change for a dollar?”
That had me laughing for the rest of the night.
The only problems I can see so far with the show are minor stylistic quirks. Things like a little bit sharpish transitions in one or two places. But I imagine as the show evolves any stylistic problems will be ironed out.
Dr. House is played by Hugh Laurie, who many british comedy fans will remember from Blackadder. He played Lord Percy in series 2, The prince in series 3, and the Leutenant under Blackadder in series 4. The perfect man for the job if you ask me.
anyway, the first episode is on this Tuesday on FOX at 9:00 (repeated Friday at the same time). More information on the show (not much sadly) can be found here: http://www.fox.com/house/ and on the main fox page: [url=“http://www.fox.com/home.htm”]www.fox.com/home.htm, if you click on the little “House” button in the bottom right-hand corner, and shows a scene not in the pilot.
I’ll be watching the next episode, you can be sure of that. It fits nicely with my schedule, as CSI begins on Spike at 7:00, and a second beigns at 8:00, and there’s a blank spot between 9:00-10:00 where there is no CSI, and house nicely fills this void on tuesdays (only to be followed up again by more CSI at 10!)
